- "The goal of design research is to improve the quality of decision-making under conditions of uncertainty. You can't know everything, but you should learn whatever is possible to find out before committing resources to a course of action that has associated costs. And you should set yourself up to continue learning and making adjustments as new information becomes available.
- If an organization is learning, that is to say making better and better decisions over time, that is an indication that research and design are functional and productive. Serendipity is also a good indicator. An organization that cultivates curiosity will benefit in unexpected ways.
- Before choosing new tools, or making process changes, it's worth reviewing and evaluating significant decisions from the last 12-36 months (whatever timeframe allows you to see how things played out after the initial effect or reaction). This sort of assessment will help uncover the true barriers and success factors. Otherwise it's easy to pile reactions on top of reactions and make things worse, like introducing stoats to control the rabbit population."
